Dental Implantology

It is impossible to imagine a modern dentistry without dental implantology, as well as a complete functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of the patient’s mouth.

Implantology, as a part of dentistry, i.e combination of the prosthodontics and periodontal surgery, had begun its development more than 50 years ago, while the implants with the present shape and characteristics have been incorporated into the people’s body/jawbone from 1965. when prof.dr. P.I.Branemark had inserted first implants surgically.

Dental implantology and implantoprosthetics are the fastest and most quality developing branch of the dentistry and medicine generally in the last 10 years.

Live your lives with implants

Teeth loss is a common problem. 30% of the world population suffers from complete loss of all natural teeth, while 80% miss at least one tooth. Since some of the traditional ways of treatment implies trimming of the healthy remaining teeth in order to make a bridge, thus implant therapy appears as the only and sense way to treat teeth loss. When an entire tooth is lost – crown and root - shrinkage of the jawbone may occur making the face look older. Dental implants can stop this process. There are many ways to replace tooth crowns, but only dental implants can replace the entire tooth including both crown and root. Dental implants look, feel and function like your own natural teeth.

Dental implants are the permanent way for you to replace your missing teeth. Research and documentation show long-lasting results, and hundreds of thousands of people are now enjoying their new looks and their ability to laugh, speak and eat with confidence!

What is an implant?

A dental implant is a small man-made titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the bone of the upper or lower jaw and allowed to bond with the bone and serve as an anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth. Implant supported replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. Dental implants are a proven restorative option with a long clinical history. Dental implants preserve the integrity of the facial structure and reduce the inconvenience associated with tooth los

Are dental implants successful?

With more than three decades of clinical experience and over a million patients treated, crowns and bridges supported by Nobel Biocare and Astra Tech implants are highly successful. The statistics confirm a success rate of nearly 95 percent for individual implants – even higher for the bridges they support. The unique design and the surface, Nobel Biocare’s TiUnite and Astra Tech’s Osseospeed Microthread  give superior strength and ensure that the teeth stay securely in place.
The threads on the fixture anchor the implant and preserve the bone. This maintains the soft tissue contour which is important for natural look. Most patients can expect implants to last a life time. The first patient received his dental implants 40 years ago and they are still functioning today.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Anyone who is missing one or more of their teeth due to injury, disease, or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. If one, a few or all teeth are missing, dental implants in conjunction with a crown or bridge can replace those teeth. Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits that dental implants offer. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you're healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants. Implant treatment is not recommended to the patients who suffer from serious heart disease, severe osteoporosis, uncontrolled diabetes, psychosis. If you are under eighteen, you must be examined to make sure you have finished growing before you can undergo implant treatment.

As implants are usually installed under local anesthesia, you will not feel any pain during the surgery. The implants are placed in a very gentle fashion and care is taken to the various tissues involved.  The treated area may be swollen for a few days afterwards, which could be slightly painful. In most cases an ordinary painkiller is all you may need to feel fine

How will I benefit from dental implants?

The benefits of implant treatment include appearance, the enhanced ability to chew and enjoy your food, and often protection of your remaining teeth and jawbone. Dental implants offer many benefits never before available for the treatment of missing teeth. They will improve your speech. Dental implants can eliminate the numerous embarrassing inconveniences of removable partial and full dentures. You will eliminate the use of gooey denture adhesives that must be re-applied throughout the day. You will no longer need to cover your mouth when you laugh or smile, for fear that your teeth will pop out or fall down. Dental implants will improve your overall self- esteem and you will feel better about yourself.  In short, dental implants will look, feel and function like your real teeth.

Don’t be afraid to show your teeth!

How much will it cost?

Although dental implant treatment may initially be more expensive than other treatment methods it often turns out to be the best investment from a long term perspective since most patients can expect them to last a life time. Other treatment method like bridges and dentures often requires regular alterations and adjustments over time. The fee for tooth replacement with dental implants will depend on several factors, including the number of teeth being replaced and the number of implants required to support your replacement teeth. It is important for you to know that you do not necessarily need an implant for each missing root. Some additional procedures may be required prior to the placement of your dental implants to ensure the long-term health of your dental implants. To obtain a specific fee estimate, it is necessary to come for the first examination of your mouth, or at least send x-rays, photos, or treatment plans from your dentist. After a thorough diagnostic examination, we will recommend the treatment that is best for you and what your investment would be for the procedure

Is it important to take care of the implants after the treatment is completed?

Yes! Maintaining care of the implants will help to assure the long-term success of your treatment. You will be responsible for daily plaque removal, which can be accomplished through brushing and flossing around your restoration. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to properly care for your implants. You must visit your dentist at least once a year for maintenance appointments.

Are the complications possible in the implantoprosthetic therapy?

Complications are possible to occur, but in the hands of a skilled dentist, it is pretty rare.

However, a small percentage of the implants can be rejected. The solution is to place a new one. Infections are possible rarely, but mostly because of the inadequate maintenance. Heavy smokers have 10% less chances for the successful outcome of the treatment.

After the prosthetic part is finished, a fracture of the crown, bridge or prosthesis may occur, but it is repairable. Fractures of the implant are the rarest complication, maybe the most serious, but only because it takes some time to reconstruct the new implant and new prosthesis.

Why doesn’t my dentist do implants?

Implantology is a very specific branch of dentistry. A dentist must be educated and skilled to do surgical or prosthetical part of implantoprosthetic treatment, or even both. This education takes time. Furthermore, dentist must be equipped with sophisticated instruments, devices and surgical and prosthetical components, which can cost a lot.

How long will the treatment take?

Treatment time will vary depending on your unique situation. Traditional protocol requires one- or two-staged procedure, waiting 3-6 months after the implantation for the osseointegration, and then producing of the crown, bridge or prosthesis, therefore in some cases it may be necessary to wait a longer time period before finishing the restoration in order to obtain an optimal result. Nowadays it is often possible to get well functioning and esthetic looking teeth within a few days, or even in a few hours! With the initial examination, the surgery, post surgery check-up, the prosthetic work and one recall, it normally takes about 6-8 visits until the treatment is completed.

For our patients from abroad we always try to avoid many traveling and flights, and very often offer and perform Immediate Function Concept, including Nobel Guide surgery.

What is Immediate Function™?

Immediate Function™ is a core concept of Beautiful Teeth Now™. Historically, implants have been associated with a time consuming surgical procedure. New solutions have revolutionised this, by allowing you to get beautiful, natural looking teeth, from the very moment they are placed. Nobel Biocare has made implant treatment easy. The benefits of Immediate Function™ are shortened treatment time, better clinical efficiency and fewer traumas for you – it is now possible to go from suffering from tooth loss to having functional and esthetic teeth in one treatment session. Immediate Function™ is for every clinician comfortable with implant treatment. But as for any treatment modality there are different skill levels required for different situations. Today several clinics have adopted this rewarding concept and treat 80-90% of their patients with Immediate Function™, to the benefit for the patient and the clinic. One of those is our clinic

Tooth In a Day – Effective solution for a single missing tooth

Why trim healthy neighboring teeth to substitute one missing tooth?

Or have a Maryland bridge fixed to your adjacent teeth and chew with caution because it might fall off?

Or even wear uncomfortable partial denture with clasps?

You are not happy with your tooth which was filled numerous times, and which is dark and ugly?

You don’t smile because of that tooth?

   Examples from our practice

Fast, esthetically and functionally very effective solution for your problem is an implant inserted on the place where you already miss the tooth or placed immediately after the extraction. Using appropriate implants and prosthetic components in just 2-3 hours you can have your tooth extracted, an implant inserted, temporary abutment and a temporary crown placed. This temporary crown will satisfy the esthetics and function until the final restoration is placed on the same implant. http://www.nobelbiocare.com/global/en/newPatientInformation/SingleMissing/singleToothMissing.htm

The Teeth-in-an-Hour™ protocol is a unique solution made possible by the Procera® System. A custom fabricated precision drill guide and a pre-manufactured prosthesis, based on CT images and virtual planning, can be made before surgery. The major decisions of the treatment are made during the planning. The execution of the implant placement that follows is performed with minimal surgical intervention.

The result is that the patient leaves the chair with teeth in place after a short and non-traumatic surgery with a minimum of post-operative reactions. This new modality provides enhanced patient satisfaction and simplifies the work of the treatment team.

NobelGuide™ is a revolutionary treatment planning and surgical implementation system enabling the dentist to transfer extraoral planning into the mouth with unrivaled accuracy and ease.

With NobelGuide™ the placing of the implant, abutment and restorative crown or bridge is simultaneous. It is applicable to any patient indication, by using either conventional modeling or computer aided - 3D design –   NobelGuide™ shows the dentist the exact position and depth of the implants before surgery.

This information enables Nobel Biocare or the lab to produce a surgical template which guides the flapless procedure from start to a completely successful placement.

Practically, this means beautiful teeth for you, our patient, in just one visit.

Who wouldn't love the idea of having beautiful, great working teeth – by only attending a few appointments and a minimally invasive procedure that gets you back in social and working life in no time?

With Nobel Guide™ you can make your nightmares disappear and your dreams come true.

Mini Implants

Since the FDA approved mini implants as a long term method of denture stabilization, mini implants have become increasingly popular among dentists and patients as well.. They are also used for supporting crowns in situations in which there is not enough room for a standard implant.  Mini implants are 1.8 – 2.0 – 2.5 mm in diameter and usually come in 4-5  lengths.

The length chosen by the surgeon is determined by the amount of bone available to retain the implant, as well as an assessment of the density of the bone. Mini implants allow immediate loading.  This means that the patient walks out of the office on the day of surgery with a lower denture which is not only solidly stable, but can be used to eat immediately.  Mini implants can often (not always) be placed in the lower jaw without cutting an incision in the gums.  In other words, they can often be placed right through the gums directly into the underlying bone. The old lower denture (very often the upper as well) can then be retrofitted over the newly placed implants, and the patient can use the denture immediately without waiting for the three to six months necessary for a standard implant to integrate.  Furthermore, because the implants are about the size of a standard wooden toothpick (they are made out of a titanium alloy), patients who have been told that there is not enough bone to accommodate standard implants can generally be fitted with minis.  The entire procedure (placing the implants and retrofitting the old denture so that it is supported by the newly placed minis) takes about 90 minutes.  It is generally painless, and produces very minimal post operative discomfort.

To keep in mind!

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing or clenching your teeth. This condition affects both kids and adults.

Some people with bruxism unconsciously clench their teeth together during the day, often when they feel anxious or tense. Most kids who have bruxism — and some adults with the condition — grind or gnash their teeth during sleep, usually in the early part of the night. This is called sleep bruxism.

In most cases, bruxism is mild and may not even require treatment. However, it can be frequent and violent and can lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems. Unfortunately, people with sleep bruxism usually aren't aware of the habit, so they aren't diagnosed with the condition until complications occur. That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms of bruxism and to seek regular dental care.

Bruxism and an implant treatment usually do not go together; moreover bruxism is sometimes an absolute contraindication for the implantoprosthetic treatment, especially for the Immediate Function! Eventually, a nightguard can help. It is a specially designed piece of plastic that perfectly fits your lower and upper teeth preventing the teeth come together.
